Description

With weekly 1.5-hour classes, the Grade 3 curriculum lays a solid foundation for computational thinking in the early years. Upon completion of Grade 3, students gain a solid understanding of coding fundamentals. Typing drills are taught in order to develop automaticity and fluency with their typing skills which also aids them when coding using Python. Binary drills are taught as well to develop numeracy skills and introduce computer language. Hands on activities are also introduced where students learn how to create parallel and series circuits and test them using physical components (wires, lightbulbs, batteries, switches etc.) so they can visualize their circuit diagrams, learn how circuits function and determine whether different items are conductors or insulators. Students continue to work on more hands-on activities with a microcontroller (microbit) which merges their coding and circuitry skills as they learn how to code to create different images using LEDs. Students expand their vocabulary by learning and discussing technological terms and viewing educational videos about the key terms. Students in this grade complete two research projects, the first is about famous inventors/inventions and the second is a PowerPoint presentation about their favourite technological term which includes an oral presentation.
